Hyla eximia
This adorable green and brown Tree Frog came to the garden light to catch insects. It was 5 cm long. This species is endemic to Mexico.
Garden, semi-urban area near wetlands, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
We have had heavy rains for several days and all the frogs and toads are out and singing.
I am so glad you found the ID for this one Ashley, you must have dozens of little frog images in your mind waiting to be put in their place!
To me, Smilisca baudinii has more bumpy looking skin, where as Hyla eximia has really smooth skin. Would love to see both of them though!
Ha! I know this guy as well. I IDed it as Smilisca baudinii, which was close and yet far away, namly wrong. It was also Hyla eximia...
I have looked at this spotting many times since you uploaded it, and could never figure out the species. I love your pictures and think this guy is beautiful, and it really bothered me I couldn't figure out what it was. But I was at a talk a few weeks ago over herps of Mexico and they showed this one in the presentation and I immediately thought of your spotting so I had to come ID it haha
