Cannonball Tree or Naag Champa

Couroupita guianensis

Description:

The flowers grow out of the trunk. When I first saw this tree I thought it was a parasitic flowering. It is a tall tree. The fruit looks like a cannon ball; hence the name.

Habitat:

I have seen this ornamental tree alongside roads, near lakes but never two or more trees together. This particular tree is growing by the side of a busy road.

Notes:

The flowers are used for worship in India especially for Lord Shiva because the stamens look like snakes....also called Naag-keshar or Naag-champa. (Naag = snake) Fruit: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/186...
