Northern Red-bellied Cooter

Pseudemys rubriventris

A young Northern Red-bellied Cooter found basking on top of floating vegetation on the edge of a pond.

Edge of fresh water pond in aquatic vegetation

There is a very high population of Eastern Painted Turtles, Northern Red-bellied Cooters and Musk Turtles among other species that populate this pond - Sometimes they have to climb on top of each other at the basking spots because of over crowding.

An excellent photo series of this young turtle. The last photo took me quite by surprise. A wonderful spotting, Tyler.
