Stropharia rugosoannulata
A large (15 cm diameter) mushroom, with a distinctive "gear" shaped annulus (ring).
Good to know. Keep on the hunt, we need more people documenting mushrooms from every part of the world. It's a very under-studied subject, they say only 1 in 14 species of fungi have been discovered.
Randy, according to these authors, Wine caps HAVE been observed in Brazil... www.fungaldiversity.org/fdp/sfdp/32-3.pd...
You should post this on MushroomObserver.org and get some expert opinions. If it is a wine cap it would be the furthest south observation of them.
Well, now I have two reasons to go back where I found it: to colect it for registering its presence here, and for to try it... :-)
Also, it is a great edible so the chances of someone introducing it down there are pretty high.
I'm sure it just hasn't been documented down there yet. It's definitely a Stropharia, and I don't know any other species in that genus that have that color or stature.
Randy, I know you know a lot about fungi, but the link you provided says that it is found in Europe and North America (and more recently in New Zealand)...
Very cool find Sérgio,i dont imagine what species or genus he belong, amazing ring :-)
