Description:

It is a medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 15–18 metres (49–59 ft) tall, with a trunk up to 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) diameter, with brown to gray bark, maturing into hard plates or ridges. The short thick trunk supports long and straggling branches which form a broad and irregular head. The roots are fibrous and branches are brittle. Its juices are watery and bitter

Habitat:

Southern US. These were in the Captive or rescued animals area at the Robert Lee Honbarrier Bald Eagle Habitat, Nature Center, and Cheerwine Aquarium at Dan Nicholas Park, 6800 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC 28146. http://www.dannicholas.net

When I was a girl, we had a Catalpa tree in our chicken pen area. When the pods got dry I would shake the tree and the hens would come running for the seeds that came out of the pods.
