Sarracenia purpurea
Pitcherplants are a type of carnivorous plant, meaning they get some of their nutrients from animals, typically insects. They catch an insect when it flies into the opening of the "pitcher". Once inside, the bug can't climb out due to water that has filled the pitcher and hairs which line the top part of the pitcher above the water. The plant turns the water which has filled it into a digestive soup by secreting enzymes into it which can extract the nutrients from the insect.
Found in peat bogs which are low in many nutrients. See the fifth picture for an idea of the habitat.
