Pacific Golden Plover

Pluvialis fulva

Description:

This is a medium sized plover, some 25cm in length, presented here either juvenile or a bird in its winter plumage. It has a slender body and upright posture; and shows pale face with a short and rounded bill, and pale, slightly streaked underparts. Supercilium is also pale and well distinguished. It sports a golden sheen on brown back.

Habitat:

Observed wading alone in a grassland close to a small pond, on that world-famous beach bordering rich agricultural area or rural Teknaf.

Notes:

There were a lot of discussion about this one, if it was European or Pacific Golden plover, and this one was a difficult choice. Actually, various resources do not agree on the distribution of the former one (P. apricaria); which caused some confusion. In the end, I decided to keep it as P. fulva (the same comment for spotting of few days later), mainly because it is the only one listed in Bangladesh; but must admit that none of the lists I consulted seemed complete...
