For this spotting, zooming in on the center of the flower reveals the diagnostic lotus seed pod forming.
an expert just now confirmed that both the flowers are different varieties of Nelumbo nucifera.
I believe too it's a lotus but the White Lotus leaf is not the same and neither seem to have the same petals like this one.
It may be a lotus but since the leaves are (still) floating as opposed to having grown above the water surface, I'm not sure. It looks like there may be both lily and lotus leaves in your photo...The view of the center of the flower kind of looks like lotus, but its not very clear in the photo. STOP PRESS. I zoomed in on your flower's center and I am making a species suggestion. It is a lotus.
Confusing? Nymphaea lotus is a water lily. There are many species of water lily in the genus Nymphaea. Nelumbo (2 species) is the genus for the lotus that resemble water lilies. The genus Lotus does not look like a water lily. Water lilies have leaves that float and are (usually) split. Lotus leaves will eventually rise off the water surface and are not split.
And secondly, Nymphaea is the genus for Lily, while Nelumbo is the genus for Lotus... That may explain the difference.. Though I am myself very confused about it..
I may have identified it wrong on my own picture as well then.... better double-check!
Thanks... Certainly it is white and it is lotus, but the wikipedia link of N.lotus describes a picture with petals quite different.
