Chelydra serpentina
Huge, powerful, and prehistoric-looking (probably because it IS!). Was not happy about being pestered, so it crawled away and took to the water. A skilled swimmer.
Stream and its bank, in VA Tech Duck Pond park
It was not as aggressive as snapping turtles are imagined to be. It let me get right up next to it and did nothing. When I tried to get it to snap (using a stick, not my hand!), it retreated to the water.
