White-tailed Deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

Largest of Illinois' mammals, this animal is a medium sized deer red to tan above in spring and summer and gray to brown fall and winter. Brown, gray reddish tail that is edge with white and white on the underside. Underside of the body is also white.

Habitat:

This animal prefers the edge where woodlands meet open areas. Due to the current success of this animal since reintroduction to the state this species can be sighted in many unexpected locations.

Notes:

This particular deer was very calm and undisturbed by my presence. I was able to get very close, approximately 25 yards, to this individual which never displayed any behaviors that indicate that deer display when nervous. It was a wonderful experience. It was clear that it could see me the entire time I was taking pictures. Pictures 2 and 3 were the last two I took of this beautiful animal.
