Eye-spotted Lady Beetle

Anatis Mali

Description:

Brown ladybug with black spots which are, in turn, surrounded by a pale ring. This is the only one of its type that I have seen so far (I have been assuming all of the others were Asian Lady Beetles, but since this one has the infamous black M on it protonum I have to wonder about some of the others.) Bugguide remarks "Like other Anatis species, the Eye-spotted Lady Beetle darkens with age. The pale rings also darken, but are visible under strong lighting in all but the oldest individuals."

Habitat:

Native to the US and Canada; This was spotted under a mature pine on a section of pipe which is currently filled with water.
