Tobacco hornworm

Manduca sexta

7 diagonal lines on its sides and a curved red horn. Not to be confused with the tomato hornworm who's 8 white markings are V-shaped and has a black horn.

Habitat:

Tobacco fields, vegetable gardens, and a wide variety of other habitats.

They do not bite nor can the tail cause injury. Hornworms have a special mechanism that allows them to feed on tobacco plants, which are toxic to most insects. They selectively sequester and secrete the nicotine. University of Nebraska-Nebraska EntWeb-Department of Entomology
