Xerula furfuracea
Xerula furfuracea is the largest, brownest species of Xerula in all of North America. The cap on this specimen was approx. 6 inches wide. The stipe was over one foot tall. The stipe extends into the ground/soil via taproot to assist in supporting this massive Mushroom.
Saprobic on decaying debris of hardwoods--but not typically growing on logs or stumps, unless they are well decomposed.
