Common garter snake

Thamnophis sirtalis

Description:

Lateral and dorsal stripes with red markings between dorsal and lateral stripes. Eyes large.

Habitat:

Non-native grassland in a mosaic of open hayfields and variously-aged stands of Douglas-fir forest. Found under sheet metal.

Notes:

Northwestern garter snakes (two different color morphs) were found with the common garter snake.
