plains pricklypear

Opuntia polyacantha

Description:

Found this blooming pricklypear a few miles north of Goose Creek Reservoir, Idaho.

Habitat:

Found growing with sagebrush, green rabbitbrush, Utah juniper, Sandberg's bluegrass, milkvetch and sego lilies.

Notes:

I saw other pricklypear cactus with yellow and orange blooms in the same area as well. The inside of this cactus is edible and tastes like cucumber. Make sure you get all of the spines off it first though!
