Because they did genetics studies on the Genus Rana and determined the European species to be different from the Americas so the Americas got changed to Lithobates and Europe is still Rana.

Note: The scientific name of the bullfrog used to be "Rana catesbeiana", but is now "Lithobates catesbeianus". Beautiful pictures, and it's cool seeing two giant frogs close like that!
