Distinctive wing pattern, bold heart-shaped marks on abdomen, becoming bright red in mature male. Length is about 3 cm. This is an immature male.
Eastern and central North America. Ponds, lakes with marshy borders.
Predatory, forages in fields, perching on the tips of plants, as do other pennants.

Look closely at the terminal appendages, Ken. This dragonfly is an immature male; its color will change from yellow to red as it matures.
