A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Melanthera nivea
Family: Asteraceae. Native in the deep south and parts of Texas to South America, I have found that this species has a highly variable leaf, which is rough to the touch. It can grow as tall as 6 feet but I have also seen dwarf forms, primarily near salt water. It blooms most of the year and self-sows freely and thus spreads easily. Despite having a square stem it is not in the mint family.
