Desert Spiny Lizard

Description:

Large up to 5.5 inches long, large girth. Subdued grayish blue with very dark blue collar area under neck. Males have vivid blue throats and under bellies. Exhibit metachromatism which is color change as a function of temperature. Cool temperatures mean darker colors. Darker colors allow for increased heat absorption from the sun.

Habitat:

AZ, TX, into Mexico from sea level to 5000 feet.

Notes:

Very large, not at all afraid. Beautiful blue markings on its neck and belly. They love to eat strawberries when we put them out for the birds!
