Found these bugs munching on a plant called miner's lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata). Evidently these are true bugs (Hemiptera) and possibly in the family Pentatomidae (thanks John La Salle). Still not sure what species though.
Found these beetles in an area recovering from the Hot Well Fire that burned in the summer of 2012. The flora of the area was mostly Siberian wheatgrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, Sandberg bluegrass, lupine, tansy mustard, tapertip onion, big sagebrush and bitterbrush.
Miner's lettuce (the plant in the pictures) can be eaten by humans!

Looks good to me! I'm going to leave this as an unknown until I can get the species though. Thanks for the help!
Not beetles - but true bugs (Hemiptera)
Probably shield bugs - Pentatomidae

But hopefully a "bug person" will jump on and confirm this.
