Peacock Pansy

Junonia almana

Description:

Orange when wings are open a drab, light dirty cream undersides on wings this restless butterfly has "eyes"and other markings on its wings.

Habitat:

About ten of these were sitting on the lawns of a government office in direct sun with temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius. Pairs would dance up and fly together then settle separately on the grassy lawn with tiny unidentified wildflowers. They were not tempted by the garden flowers growing nearby but kept returning to that part of the lawn that was in the direct glare of the Sun...

Notes:

It was about 9AM but the Sun was too strong to stand for a long time in the open or to chase these for a better closeup.
