Coconut Tree - Hana, Maui

Cocos nucifera

Description:

Coconut tree with v-cut damage to leaves and rotting center. Kaeleku, Hana, Maui.

Habitat:

Lowland wet roadside.

Notes:

Looked like possible CRB at first, with leaf damage and dying center, but trees look regularly pruned, and a lot of other coconut trees in Hana seem to have the heart rot(?) problem. No similar v-cut leaf damage signs on nearby trees. Google Street View of location - http://goo.gl/CDXW73

The cuts in the fronds to the right definately look like CRB damage to the emerging spear. Cuts appear midway down the frond rather than at the tips which would be indicative of pruning damage. Definately worth checking.

Thank you for this photo, this is the first tree spotting outside of O'ahu that we've received. Those are interesting cuts in the fronds, we will pass this on to the Incident Response team for further evaluation. Thanks again for your input!
