Black Rhinocerous

Diceros bicornis

Description:

Upper lip pointed, ears rounded. Two horns on nose. Eyes small. Neck thick and powerful with hump at shoulders. Three toes on each foot. Hair sparse showing bare grey skin.

Habitat:

Confined to conservation areas as they are endangered. We visited the Matusadona Conservation Scheme at Tashinga near Kariba.

Notes:

A very interesting visit. All these Black Rhinos we met had been hand raised and then allowed to wander. They would all come back to where they were raised. We were walking among fully grown beasts as we were guided around the complex. An amazing experience.
