Egyptian Flower Mantis

Blepharopsis mendica

Description:

Attracted to the tent by the dozens of moths and insects flying around the light; this guy had an open buffet for dinner! We watched him for at least a half an hour as he hung out and caught and ate moth after moth. He tried to catch the large Striped Hawk Moths but they always got away. (And I was too enthralled to leave to get the good camera so please excuse the blurry shots.)

Habitat:

high mountain desert plain

Notes:

aka Devil's Flower Mantis, Thistle Mantis, Arab Mantis
