False Earthstar

Astraeus hygrometricus

Description:

Around 2 cm across. Found these little guys just down the street in front of a neighbor's house.

Habitat:

Roadside in some woodchips, northeast Grand Rapids.

Notes:

Seems to be an ectomycorrhizal symbiote of the maple tree it's under.

I don't think is a Astraeus... the endoperidium is smooth and it has a "defined" stomata... while Astraeus has warts and the mouth is not well defined... I think it's a good Geastrum. If you colected it, just split it on the half... if you see a collumella is a Geastrum, if you don't is a Astraeus (also you can check the spores).
