Vanessa cardui
By far the commonest butterfly in our garden, but I am battling to identify it. Is it a version of the African Monarch? None of my butterfly books show anything any where near close, the three photos show 1) underside, 2) upperside and 3) an example of a damaged version which, interestingly enough, could still fly. We see at least 10 of these every day, and as the winter draws in, the ones with the damaged wings are becoming more obvious

Thank you! Now that you have pointed it out I can find it in my books, but the photos in my books only show the male underside and the female upperside and not in such vivid colours!
