Colobus guereza occidentalis
A large sturdy monkey. The name 'colobus' means 'he cut short' and refers to the species' stumpy thumb. Colobus monkeys are herbivores and live high up in the canopy. They live in small groups with one male and a number of females and their offspring. The babies are born completely white and later turn into their tell-tale black and white.
Seen near to the Colobus Conservation, a non profit making concern set up in 1997 because the locals were concerned about the fatalities on the busy roads.
The group seen here together were having a real rough-and-tumble where all that could be seen was black & white fur and the occasional individual when it jumped free - a monkey rugby scrum! These monkeys were taking advantage of the new shoots produced by regular pruning of the hotel gardens.

Great spotting and species!
Great pictures, which brought back memories. We had a lucky colobus spotting about 10 years ago, adults feeding and juveniles playing as you describe -- at Mt Kenya. Hotel staff stopped to watch them and told us how lucky we were. We saw them again at Nakuru, fleeting glimpses of black and white furballs that didn't allow for great pictures
