Oriental Magpie-robin

Copsychus saularis

Description:

The Oriental Magpie-robin is an Old-World flycatcher from Muscicapidae family. It reaches about 20 cm in length, including a long tail, often held cocked upright when hopping on the ground. Pictured in pics 1 to 3 is female, dark grey above and pale-rose to pale-grey below, with white stripes on wings. The male (clicks N° 4 and 5) has black upperparts, head and throat, and white underparts and that wing stripe. The song is beautiful and loud, I often found it by the song.

Habitat:

Here observed in urban environment of Cox's Bazar, over a number of days and in various spots of the town; however all sites in a new part of the town and close to the beach, a stretch I use to walk everyday - a succession of ponds, marshes and backyard gardens.

Notes:

This is the national bird of Bangladesh, and is called the Doel or Doyel in Bengali (a.k.a. Bangla) language. As national symbol, it appears on national currency notes, and there is also a monument to this bird in Dhaka.
