Common Yellowthroat Warbler

Geothlypis trichas

Description:

A small olive green bird with a bright yellow chest. This was a baby learning to fly.

Habitat:

Mixed forest.

Notes:

This little chick was brought to me by a group of well-meaning children that found it down on the ground. It appeared uninjured, so I went looking for it's nest and found both parents actively flying around and calling. Once they were located, this little baby flew almost 30 feet on its own, so I helped it back into the tree and it was able to hop up another 10 feet into its nest. The mother bird immediately started tending to it again, and I assume flying lessons resumed a short while later.

It sure was fun to interact with a wild bird this way. I'm sure you enjoyed it too Jamie.

I had an experience like this, a migratory adult male was so tired from migrating that he let me pick him up and carry him away from a dog that was in the backyard he flew away soon after.
