A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Atelerix albiventris
The African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), is a small species of hedgehog that can be found in the wild and in captivity. Also referred to as the four-toed hedgehog, these animals are the most popular form of domesticated hedgehog by far. In the wild they primarily eat insects and plants. Their natural predators are animals like owls, badgers, and jackals.
The African pygmy hedgehog can be found in central and eastern Africa. This band of space extends as far south as Mozambique, although their population is much more scattered in that area. You can find them in lowland woods and grassy areas where the surroundings are generally dry.
Most people only know these animals as domesticated pets since they're quite docile and easy to keep in your home. However, the knowledge of their continued presence in the wild is less understood among the general public.
