False Morel

Gyromitra gigas

Description:

Spotted this morel impostor (and another near by that fell over) while hiking along the river.

Habitat:

Riverside Park, close to the river.

Notes:

Considered nonpoisonous, though its similarity to gyromitra esculenta, which can be deadly, probably makes it best to avoid eating them. According to the mushroomexpert.com page on esculenta, the differentiating characteristic is that esculenta does not have such a massive stem in relation to it's cap.
