Monk Parakeet, Quaker Parakeet

Myiopsitta monachus

Description:

These striking and chattering green birds (parakeets) have been in the neighborhood for at least three years. I stopped this morning because of the large number and because I saw a bluish one in the mix. I love seeing them and hearing them although I am not sure all my neighbors agree.

Habitat:

Urban, very near Buffalo Bayou. At Gregg and Cline streets. East end of downtown Houston. Apparently, their native habitat was in dead trees on the border of the prairies where they could nest and then forage on the ground. Houston was once mostly prairie and there are some large fields and vacant lots nearby.

Notes:

There were about 15-20 more on the corner before I stopped to roll down the window to take the picture. There were two who looked like they were mating. beautiful birds but noisy. Reminds me of similar flocks of birds in the trees of Barcelona, Spain.

Thank you. That is exactly what they are. I stopped this morning to take a photo because there were so many and there was a bluish one in the mix that flew away with the others before I could get the cell phone out and turned on.
