Blue Spotted Salamander

Ambystoma laterale

Description:

8-14 cm in length Adults are black above and with a grey underbelly, and covered with small blue spots or flecks. The long tail comprises 40% of the salamander's body weight.

Habitat:

Adults inhabit most types of forest habitat, where they live in leaf litter on the forest floor. Look in cool, damp places such as under logs! Salamanders are most active at night and in the spring, when they enter woodland ponds to breed.

Notes:

The sensitive, semi-permeable skin of most salamanders is affected by oils, sunscreens and bug repellant. Before touching any salamanders (or any amphibian), be sure that your hands are clean! The blue Spotted Salamander may be easily confused with Jefferson Salamanders or Small-mouthed Salamanders, so be sure to double check with your field guide.
