Description:

Large butterfly with a wingspan around 10-12cm; base colour of the wings is dark brown/black with yellow markings, hind wings with clubbed tails; head and thorax are also black with yellow stripes and abdomen is yellow with a black stripe down the middle. When the butterfly rests in this position, there's a small area on the hind wings, just below the abdomen, with a blue band above a small orange spot.

Habitat:

Scrubby area in the southern Colombian Andes at about 1600m above sea level. This picture was taken within the "Tierradentro" archeological park.
