Hooded Merganser female

Lophodytes cucullatus

Description:

The birds in question are NOT the Canada Geese that are visible in 3 of the photos, but the duck-type bird (with a baby and occasionally another adult) closer to shore. You can compare size with the geese though. The second pic you can see the baby swimming behind the adult, and then the third you can see the baby resting on the tail of the adult. I will have to go back to this location on a sunny day and see if I can get better photos of these birds. I was thinking "Loon", but it is obviously not a loon. I thought merganser, but... There were some other ducks in another pond nearby that I photographed that may be the same or different. Because of that I will post separately.

Habitat:

A pond alongside a large family of Canada Geese. Summer climate.
