Mint Moth

Pyrausta aurata

Description:

It is a small moth active by day.The purplish-brown wings have a span from 10 - 15 mm, and a single golden yellow spot on each overwing and underwing. In north-west Europe it can be seen from April until the end of September, and is capable of having two generations in each season.

Habitat:

As the name suggests, the mint moth often uses mint as a food plant, though it can also be found on other species such as marjoram.

Notes:

Sometimes very difficult to determine is it Pyrausta aurata or Pyrausta purpuralis cause they are very similar, for more about that follow the link in my references! Related spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/345...

Crambidae, Pyraustinae, Pyraustini, Pyrausta sp. and most probably Pyrausta aurata and not Pyrausta purpuralis. Please, verify and check yourself. Easy and nevertheless not as easy as it seems...
