Texas Horned Lizard

Phrynosoma cornutum

Description:

Flat lizard with spikes on the back of the head and spikey scales covering most of the body. There are dark blotches on the neck and down the back, and usually a dorsal stripe. There are two rows of fringe scales on the sides, that is an easy way to differentiate this species from other horned lizards in Texas. I put the male on top of the female to show the size and coloration difference between the adults.

Habitat:

Found running across the road during the middle of the day in desert-scrub area.
