Central American agouti

Dasyprocta punctata

Description:

Large colorful rodent. This one was stomping its front feet on the log. I have read that this may be an alarm display. We carefully crawled over the log, and the agouti moved in the opposite direction. A few were seen crossing the trail.

Habitat:

Pacific lowland forest floor.

Notes:

Agoutis feed on fallen fruit, leaves and roots, although they may sometimes climb trees to eat green fruit. They will hoard food in small, buried stores.
