Black Swallowtail ♂

Papilio polyxenes

Description:

Relatively common butterfly native to a large portion of the United States but still a lovely find.

Habitat:

Found in woodlands and in open meadows. Host plants include many herbs like parsley and wild carrot.

Notes:

First specimen I've found this year. It was extremely hot for May, about 90 F. This one bumped into me. A much larger female was seen later. Probably twice as big as this little male.
