Vicia americana
American vetch is a native, perennial, climbing vine that grows to about 1 - 2 feet tall. The purple flowers are gathered together in flower stalks of 3 to 10 flowers. They appear in May through August with the flowers giving way to 1 - 1.5 inch pods about one month after flowering. Each pod contains 2 or more pea like brown seeds.
American vetch grows in open patches in swampy woods, road banks, mixed forests, meadows and clearings. It prefers areas with full sun.
American vetch were spotted along the marshy area near South Tamarac Lake.
