American vetch

Vicia americana

Description:

American vetch is a native, perennial, climbing vine that grows to about 1 - 2 feet tall. The purple flowers are gathered together in flower stalks of 3 to 10 flowers. They appear in May through August with the flowers giving way to 1 - 1.5 inch pods about one month after flowering. Each pod contains 2 or more pea like brown seeds.

Habitat:

American vetch grows in open patches in swampy woods, road banks, mixed forests, meadows and clearings. It prefers areas with full sun.

Notes:

American vetch were spotted along the marshy area near South Tamarac Lake.
