Paralaea porphyrinaria
A grey moth about 35 mm long, with fine scales and a low forward- pointing crest on the head. The wings were held flat and had tan coloured veins. Outer wing margins were tooth-like with short tan hairs. Antennae were swept backwards and held under wings. Eyes were grey. Could not see mouth parts clearly.
Spotted near playground bordered by Eucalyptus trees - different species (spotted gum, ironbark, yellow box) and Melaleuca sp. Found in the southern states of Australia.
The larvae of these moths are said to feed on Eucalytous leaves. The adult moths wrap their fore wings around the object they are resting on for extra support. My thanks to Peter Marriott for the ID.
