Synanthedon formicaeformis
This moth can have a wingspan between 17-25 mm when fully grown. Adults have blackish abdomen with a distinctive red band the tips to the forewings are also red.
Raspberry bushes near a small river. Mixed wetland and woodland
The adults have a skittish nature and disturbance of any kind usually results in a swift departure or in some cases dropping into the vegetation making them impossible to find. The larvae feed inside the stems of willows with little outward sign to betray their presence. It was discovered for the first time in Bornholm, Denmark 1965. Ten years later it was first spoted in Swden, in Eldsberga 1975. In Europe it occurs with several from each other strongly isolated populations. As bayucca mentions it requires different types of Salix to reproduce. In Sweden these types of salix are mentioned: Salix repens, Salix caprea and Salix cinerea.
Tiz thanks. I'm loving your insects. But I am not happy here. Because all cool insects do not come to my yard and sit for hours in the leaves? I'm not asking for much. : P
Thank you very much Adarsha, dear brother Faredin, Marine Sr Gerardo and Maria dB for your comments :)
@ Sckel, You have so much colours and wonderful nature where you are, and a whole bunch of fantastic and colourful spottings. In Sweden most bugs are grey or brown :P
@ Bayucca, home for a short holiday, but stay tuned... I will find more African butterflies for you in a week or two :)
Thanks Jopy for taking the time and leading us the right direction :) And thank you (again) bayucca for an ID. I think there is a salix plantage a few houndred meters away... Alice, It did not hover. One second it was there, the next second it was gone.. But an interesting thing to observe for future spottings, thank for the advice! I am very thankful and impressed by your knowledge, all of you!
Sesiidae, Sesiinae, Synanthedonini, Synanthedon formicaeformis. Cool spotting!!
Maybe related to the clear wing Hawksmoth. Did it hover like a Hummingbird?
yes, I know, try with this species: Synanthedon culiciformis, it looks similar to me :D
That is very interesting Jopy! And I am quite far up north compared to Injica. Ill do some research myself as well :) Thanks for the comment!
Hi, Tiz, it's clearwing moth, don't know the ID, but will search, it's beatutiful moth, I didn't know they live in Europe until injica spotted it :D
