Red velvet ant (wasp really)

Dasymutilla occidentalis

Description:

This wasp was very hard to photograph because a bunch of us were stalking it, trying to get a good picture. It moved very quickly in a small area but stayed within a small radius and did not simply bolt away.

Habitat:

On Wright's Bluff Nature trail near bald cypress swamp and Lake Marion
