Eastern Tent Caterpillars

Malacosoma americana

Description:

The nests of these caterpillars are built in the crooks of trees. The caterpillars forage along the branches and then return to the nest for protection. They can be quite destructive and are considered a major pest. The caterpillars are dark with blue, black, orange and white. They have a solid white or cream stripe down the back. They can have orangish or white hairs.

Habitat:

Rockwood Park, Virginia. Temperate forest.
