Boab Tree

Adansonia gregorii

Description:

The Boab is a member of the Malvaceae family of trees. It is also commonly known as the Bottle Tree. Size ranges from 5 to 15 meters, usually between 9 and 12 metres, with a broad bottle-shaped trunk. Its trunk base may be extremely large. It is the only baobab species to occur in Australia, the others being native to Madagascar (six species) and mainland Africa and the Arabian Peninsula (two species).

Habitat:

Endemic to Australia, the Boab occurs in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, and east into the Northern Territory. These specimens were spotted in New Farm Park which is located in the inner-city Brisbane suburb of New Farm.

Notes:

There are two Boab trees in Western Australia that were so large the inside of their trunks were used as prisons back in the 1890′s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boab_Prison... and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boab_Prison...
