Cranopsis coniferus
I found this particularly handsome pair of Cranopsis coniferus in amplexus deep in the Costa Rican Rainforest at Rara Avis Rainforest lodge.
Secondary premontane Caribbean slope rainforest.
This large and beautiful female Cranopsis coniferus was hanging out in a pool made by a tractor tire rut for several days waiting for the right fellow to come along. Looks like she found him!

Fun fact! When frogs mate, the male clasps the female in an embrace called amplexus. While in some cases, complicated courting behavior occurs before mating, many species of frogs are known for attempting to mate with anything that moves and isn’t small enough to eat, including other males! It is also not uncommon to find several males all attempting to mate with a single female, and sometimes the female can become totally submerged under the weight of multiple suitors and may even drown. Amplexus can last several days; usually it occurs in the water, though some speciesmate on land or even in trees.

Thanks!!! I have to admit...I love toads. The first wild animal I ever connected with as a little child was a Western toad living in my backyard garden in California. Sadly, toads can no longer be found in that part of California.
Wonderful photo!
