Short horned lizard / Horny Toad

Phrynosoma douglassii

Description:

This little lizard wasn't all that fast, but was very difficult to spot- it matches the rocks so well.

Habitat:

Rocky top of a hill - dry, arid, sandy- about a mile from the Niobrara River. There are lots of prairie grass and flowers nearby that attract plenty of bugs for the lizards to eat.

Notes:

Their color is supposed to intensify when they are mad or threatened, but when my children chased and tried to catch him this lizard stayed white.
