Indian Flying Fox

Pteropus giganteus

Description:

A Indian flying fox, or Indian giant fruit bat at the Segwick Zoo. This was in their free flying exhibit. Which is an odd choice, because this species is a well know viral disease vector, especially to humans. I suppose since they were so high up into the trees and I had to use the max zoom on my camera to even get a decent snapshot of one the risk is low. The Indian flying fox is one of the largest bats in the world, and is a helpful pollinator and seed dispersion, though it is also considered a pest to fruit farms. Circle of life.

Habitat:

Native to Southeast Asia.
