Moorhen; Pollo de Agua

Gallinula chloropus

Description:

Moorhens can be lazy when it comes to flying, when disturbed they are more likely to run across the water flapping like crazy as in this case. They are very good climbers though and not only do they climb reeds but also bushes and trees. Nests can be up to 8 metres (25 feet) above the ground. They do fly, but mostly at night. Whether they take off after a very long run or climb a tree and jump off nobody seems to know! I have yet to photograph a Moorhen in flight but I did get a Coot recently!

Habitat:

Coastal marshes
