Spotted Fritillary (male)

Melitaea didyma

Description:

Several of these striking butterflies were spotted mud-puddling together. This species flies through Southern and Central Europe. The males are usually of a rich orange easily seen from a distance and which helps differentiate them from the other fritillaries.

Habitat:

Wet soil in an alpine ravine, alt. 1300 m. Found in the Derborence area, a high biodiversity site with two different climates; in the lower part where this spotting was made the climate is continental, dry and hot.

He he Mark thanks! Yes it's one of those where you're flying flat on the ground. You should have seen my shirt at the end of this two-day hike :-)
